In 2007, the CRA completed a corridor analysis of Shadowlawn Drive. One of the recommended improvements to was to install lighted pedestrian crosswalks at or near Shadowlawn Elementary School. Many of the residents whose children walk to school pinpointed several street crossing locations where a lighted crosswalk would improve safety. This year the Bayshore Beautification MSTU funded and installed two lighted crosswalks on Bayshore Drive, and they have been working very efficiently – that is warning motorists that pedestrians are in the roadway. Using this type of pedestrian safety and warning device on Shadowlawn Drive would provide a warning to motorist that children are crossing the street.

County Transportation has agreed to work with the CRA to install lighted crosswalk at Francis Avenue and Shadowlawn Drive. The School’s Vice Principle in charge of the project and has applied for a grant for the School Board to fund the installation of the crosswalk and associated sidewalks in the area. The Transportation Department and Collier Sidewalk Committee are supportive of applying for the grant to install sidewalks on Francis Avenue and also include the cost of the lighted crosswalk. If the grant application is successful, the CRA will coordinate with Avalon Elementary School to do the same in next years’ FY2010 grant cycle.
